How the Mulch Coverage Calculator Works

This calculator determines the volume of mulch needed to cover your garden beds at your desired depth. It converts the total cubic footage into cubic yards (the standard unit for bulk mulch purchases) and estimates the number of standard 2-cubic-foot bags if buying bagged mulch.

Recommended Mulch Depths

• 2 inches: Minimum effective depth. Suitable for refreshing existing mulch beds or light weed suppression around established plants.
• 3 inches: The ideal depth for most garden beds. Provides excellent weed suppression, moisture retention, and temperature regulation.
• 4 inches: Maximum recommended depth. Use for new beds or areas with persistent weed problems. Do not exceed 4 inches, as deeper mulch can suffocate plant roots and trap excess moisture.

Types of Mulch

Hardwood Mulch: The most popular choice. Breaks down slowly, adds nutrients to soil, and looks clean. Available in natural brown, black-dyed, and red-dyed varieties.

Pine Bark: Lightweight and acidic, making it ideal for azaleas, rhododendrons, and blueberries. Tends to float in heavy rain, so not ideal for slopes.

Cedar Mulch: Naturally insect-resistant and aromatic. Lasts longer than hardwood but costs more. Excellent around foundations and decks.

Rubber Mulch: Made from recycled tires. Doesn't decompose, but doesn't add nutrients either. Popular for playgrounds and permanent installations.

Bulk vs Bagged Mulch

For small jobs (under 2 cubic yards), bagged mulch from a garden center is convenient. For larger projects, bulk delivery is significantly cheaper per cubic yard. Most landscape supply companies deliver bulk mulch for $30-50 per cubic yard plus a delivery fee.
