Lawn Watering Calculator

Get a personalized watering schedule for your lawn based on size, climate zone, and seasonal needs.

How the Lawn Watering Calculator Works

This calculator provides a recommended watering schedule based on your lawn size and climate zone. Most lawns need approximately 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. The calculator estimates the total gallons needed and suggests how many minutes to run a typical sprinkler system.

How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?

The general rule is 1 inch of water per week for established lawns in temperate climates. In hot, dry climates, lawns may need up to 1.5-2 inches per week. In cool, humid climates, natural rainfall often covers most or all of the need.

Watering by Climate Zone

  • Cool & Humid (Northeast, Pacific NW): 0.75 - 1 inch/week. Supplement rainfall only during dry spells.
  • Temperate (Mid-Atlantic, Midwest): 1 - 1.25 inches/week. Consistent supplemental watering during summer.
  • Hot & Humid (Southeast, Gulf Coast): 1 - 1.5 inches/week. Frequent afternoon thunderstorms may reduce irrigation needs.
  • Hot & Dry (Southwest, Southern CA): 1.5 - 2 inches/week. Regular irrigation is essential during growing season.
  • Arid/Desert: 1.5 - 2+ inches/week. Consider drought-tolerant grass or xeriscaping to reduce water use.

Best Practices for Lawn Watering

  • Water deeply and infrequently: 2-3 deep waterings per week is better than daily light watering. Deep watering encourages roots to grow deeper, making grass more drought-resistant.
  • Water early morning: Between 4 AM and 10 AM minimizes evaporation and gives grass time to dry before evening, reducing disease risk.
  • Use the tuna can test: Place empty tuna cans around your lawn during watering. When they fill to 1 inch, that zone has received enough water. Time how long that takes to calibrate your system.
  • Adjust for rain: Install a rain sensor on your irrigation system to skip watering after adequate rainfall.
